Hi Everyone, Flame’ here. I want everyone to know what a great time I had with all of the surfers at UMCL’s VBS Beach Party: Surfin’ through the Scriptures. There were 70 surfers registered this year, with 24 preschool surfers. WOW!
Sam (who looked a lot like Pastor Larson) and I talked about surfing and started with the BeAttitude for the night during Assembly Time.
Sun: Be Obedient-The Call of Gideon Mon: Be Kind-David’s Kindness to Mephibosheth Tues: Be Forgiving-Unforgiving Servant Parable Wed: Be Bold-A Woman Healed Thurs: Believe-Jesus and Thomas
Kelley Johnson taught everyone some fun songs and brought back some old favorites during Sound Waves. Dean Johnson and Steve Albert helped us out with the sound and videos.
Josh Hansen, Lorrie and Dave Curry, and a few other special visitors helped us learn the story during Scripture Scene and reinforced the BeAttitude. During this station each student dug to find the Be-Attitude token of the evening to help remind them of the message.
We visited Surf’n’Sand Science Lab to participate in a science experiment with Wayne Marty and his helpers. Barb Johnson helped us to make a craft each day in Beachcomber Crafts to help us remember the daily Be-Attitude. She had a number of helpers: Emma Bixenman, Elizabeth Bixenman, Morgan Whitehead, Ellen Anderson, Riley Roepke, Michael Whitehead, Emily Theisen, Kaitlin Kolker.
Mindi and Todd Allen kept us moving during Rockin’ Rec, leading us in games each night.
The preschool surfers were led by Kelley Johnson, Barb Rebstock, and Heather Hinds. They had daily special visits from me also. Cecilia Mildenstein and Sharon Pratt stopped by to help out with the preschool surfers during craft time. The extra hands were appreciated!
There were a number of Life Guards that helped out during the week: Kelley Johnson, Pat Warner, Taylor Driver, Christi Herzog, Tracy Sullivan, Mary Laughton, Diane Hodson, Jan Musson, Justina Schimek, Wendy Jensen, Jay Jensen, Mark Johnson, Jill Miksch, Mary Lane, Staci Albert, Cecelia Mildenstein. These Life Guards helped to shepherd the surfers through each station.
On Thursday night, Family Links sponsored a Pool Party at the Le Mars City Pool. There were a few tense moments about the weather, but things cleared off and all the surfers were able to dive into some fun at the pool.
Everyone appreciated the nice meal that Jess Larson and her team provided each night before we started. Her team included Toby Sullivan, Susan Bixenman, Scott Bixenman, Rita Heimsoth, Sheri Driver, Sheila Anderson, Sharon Albert. Thanks so much to them for all their hard work. Also thank you to all that donated money and food items. Thanks to all the guys that helped move furniture!
Thanks to Nancy Brechler, Julie Roy, and Audrey Hansen for taking and/or developing the pictures of all the UMCL surfers. Thanks to Kyle Herzog for his help putting information on the website.
The “beach” in the parking lot provided a fun place for the surfers before and after VBS. I need to thank a few people for their help with it: Al Groetken for delivering the sand, Oak 'N Treasures for donating the carpet, Russell's Ready Mix for the sand, and Al Pratt for spreading out the sand.
I also wanted to report on the mission project. We collected items for the Ingathering school kits. We completed 45 school bags during the week. Thanks to Delores Shuff for making the bags and Gracie Holtgrewe for supplying the material! Great job, Surfers! I truly enjoyed my time with the UMCL surfers. I hope everyone had a good time and was able to deepen their relationship with God. I must fly now to join the next group of surfers. Thanks again to everyone who helped, Flame’ (Flam-MAY)
